Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens is an American artist and rapper, best recognized under the stage name Queen Latifah. In music, film and television Queen Latifah is the recipient of 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nods and nominations for the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah is the daughter of Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. as a police officer and Rita instructor at Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah was age of ten. Latifah, who was born and brought up within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. Latifah refers to gentle and gentle. The name was given by her cousin to her at the age of eight years old. Latifah, who was 5'10" tall power forward for the high school team, was always a tall girl. In her high school's play, Latifah performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah was a member of Ladies Fresh, a rap group that launched her beatboxing career. Latifah became a member of the Flavor Unit's original group that included several MCs as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King recorded a rendition of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He sent the recording to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was enthralled by the song. It was signed by Latifah, and released her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
